Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is diagnosed as abnormalities in the lungs that make it difficult to breathe. Over time these abnormalities can permanently obstruct airflow. Two diseases generally associated with COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema — both can be caused by smoking tobacco.
COPD cannot be cured, but it can be managed Activity and exercise may reduce symptoms by building muscle strength and lung capacity. Medications may also reduce or relieve symptoms.
