Pregnancy is not just about mother and baby. It's about the father, too! An exciting transition from husband to responsible father is about to take place. Now is the perfect time for you — dad-to-be — to take on a bigger role in helping mom achieve her goals. Here are some suggestions:
Be a Cheerleader Let her know you are on her side and that you want to join with her to kick the habit. Tell her very clearly that you will be there for her. If you smoke, quit with her. Couples tend to have a greater chance of success if they quit at the same time. Be a rock. Perhaps she will find that depending on you for comfort, help and emotional support is part of the answer.
Create a balanced lifestyle A life pattern of all work and no play, or always caring for others before taking care of yourself, can cause stress to build up. Help your partner pay close attention to her overall balance of relaxation, pleasure, work and play. Discuss any imbalances you recognize. Talk about her smoking triggers and what she achieves by smoking. Then brainstorm new actions in lieu of smoking.
